Sam Presti is doing it again. The Thunder general manager has been able to consistently flip older players for young assets/draft picks for the Thunder and he has managed to do it again. Al Horford was traded to the Thunder in the offseason after having one of the worst seasons of his career, but the Thunder have managed to revive his career and Horford has picked up trade buzz from around the NBA. Take a look at 3 potential landing spots for the veteran big-man. All of these trades are put together on TradeNBA.Com, and are just for fun!
Proposed Trade: Al Horford for Kevin Knox, Frank Nitlikina, 2023 1st Round Pick (via Mavericks – top 10 protected)
The Thunder want young assets in return for Al Horford and the Knicks need the experience to help their talented young squad. The Knicks have been overperforming led by RJ Barrett and Julius Randle and are currently competing for a playoff spot. Kevin Knox and Frank Nitlikina were two players that the Knicks reportedly had lined up in a trade package for Chris Paul during the offseason and since the Knicks are on a path to make the playoffs this season, they will need veteran experience to help their chances at making a run. For the Thunder, they will take a chance on two young players who have shown promise but have not lived up to their high draft selections in hopes of turning their careers around.
Proposed Trade: Al Horford for Aaron Nesmith, Romeo Langford, Grant WIlliams, 2022 2nd Round Pick
The Celtics are contending for the championship and Al Horford could be a very valuable veteran addition to their squad filled with talent and help the Celtics make a playoff run. The Thunder would acquire three young players in return in hopes of developing them for the future. Nesmith was a first-round pick this year and has not lived up to the hype yet. Langford was a first-round selection in the 2019 draft and has yet to play to his full potential with the Celtics and Williams has proved to be a solid all-around young forward that can be a valuable piece to Thunder teams for years to come. The Thunder can afford to take a bet on all of these young players since they are in a rebuilding phase and if the Thunder can replicate their success with young players with any of these three, they will be walking out winners in this deal. The Celtics would have to use their Trade Player Exception to make this work. Al Horford played some of his best basketball with the Celtics, and his skill set is exactly what Boston needs.
Al Horford for Cody Zeller, Miles Bridges, Jalen McDaniels, Vernon Carey Jr.
The Hornets have shocked the NBA world this season and are competing for a playoff spot which is why they will likely be buying before the trade deadline. The Hornets need veteran experience to pair with their young players and Al Horford will be able to bring that in. In order for the Thunder to trade Al Horford to the Hornets, they will have to take on Cody Zeller’s awful contract but will also receive multiple young players which they can develop for the future. Miles Bridges has proven himself to be a valuable asset and the other two players (Carey Jr. and McDaniels) will be long-term projects that the Thunder can hopefully improve as well.
