Thunder get set for preseason opener in San Antonio

The Oklahoma City Thunder will start their season on Saturday, December 12th in San Antonio as they take on the Spurs. The Thunder will not be at full strength for this first contest as seven players will not make the trip. Recently acquired Al Horford will be out as well as Lu Dort, Darius Bazley, Josh Hall, Justin Jackson, Darius Miller, or Ty Jerome.

That means the Thunder will rely on their rookies Aleksej Pokusevski and Theo Maledon both of whom will be active for this contest. For Theo Maledon his first taste of NBA action as an NBA player is made a little extra special by starting his NBA career on the same floor that his mentor, Tony Parker, made his Hall of Fame career.

Everyone is excited to see Aleksej Pokusevski, the seven-footer that plays like a guard has been spending this early portion of training camp with the wing players, so seeing if and how he defends around the perimeter will be huge.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will start his point guard career with OKC tonight but will do so without those seven pretty important players. TJ Leaf will be should be asked to step up big time with the lack of big man depth on this current roster, though I would project Mike Muscala to start in place of the missing Al Horford.

While we do not know the starting lineup yet, it could look something like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, George Hill, Hamidou Diallo, TJ Leaf, and Mike Muscala.

This will be the first time seeing a Mark Daigneault-coached team and the big focus has been on the teams’ versatility and energy, so to see how this offense and defense looks compared to Donovan’s unit, even without seven players, will be another storyline to follow.

The game will tip-off at 6 p.m. and can only be seen on the Thunder Mobile app, and website for the OKC broadcast.

Bricktown Buckets will have game recaps, and takeaways following the contest!
