The NBA and the Oklahoma City Thunder announced on Friday, December 4th via ESPN’s “The Jump” the first half of the 2020-21 NBA season 72-game schedule. Given the unknown variables that COVID-19 will present to the league, staggering the release of the schedule will allow the NBA to reschedule postponed games. This first half of the season covers from the league’s tip-off on December 22nd-March 4th.
The new-look Thunder will start their season on December 23rd as they travel to take on the Houston Rockets. This will be our first look at the highly anticipated offseason storyline, Point Guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. OKC will travel the Charolette to take on the Hornets and LaMelo Ball on December 26th, before The team will make their home debut on December 28th against the Utah Jazz.
Thunder legend Steven Adams and the New Orleans Pelicans will come to town on New Year’s Eve continuing a long tradition of hosting a game on NYE for the Thunder organization.
The longest road trip will be two separate five-game stints. The first coming January 2nd-10th seeing OKC take on the Magic, Heat, Pelicans, Knicks, and Kevin Durant’s Nets. KD will make his first trip to Oklahoma City while playing for the Nets on January 29th.
The longest homestand will be a five-game set, which sees the team welcoming in the Nets on January 29th, the Rockets (February 1st and 3rd), and the Timberwolves (February 5th and 6th). The organization announced they will not allow fans inside Chesapeake Energy Arena to start the season.
Given the league’s condensed schedule, and the goal to limit travel, the Thunder will face seven back-to-backs in the first half of the season.
All games will be carried on Fox Sports Oklahoma. The Thunder will play on National TV (NBATV) for the first time on January 17th against Thunder legend Danny Green and the 76ers. That is the team’s lone National TV game in the first half of the season.
